Wagner: Lohengrin, "Bridal Chorus"

Practiced new holiday song: We Wish You a Merry Christmas

Learned new note F# [fingering T12356 or because the right hand looks like "ears" on a shadow puppet of a rabbit, I call the fingering for F# "ears" (middle fingers are down-mouth outer two fingers are up-ears)]

Showed location of F# on the keyboard

Reviewed the fingering on the recorder by changing the letter names to finger numbers.

Analysed which fingering muscle movements were difficult and then pulled out the ones that we need to learn as automatic reflexes and practiced them with silent fingerings.

Chart with the song has some note passages in red. I asked students to tell me why I did that. Many students imediately saw sequenced patterns. Then we played just the sequenced patterns so children could hear the patterns.

COMPOSER: PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY:
Nutcracker Suite: Trepek
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmQjhwsPRDE

Terms:
What is a SUITE
In the late 19th century, the word "suite" was used by composers who had written operas or ballets with lots of popular dance movements as a format where an orchestral arrangement of these movements, in shortened versions, were created to be played at concerts.Tchaikovsky wrote the "Nutcracker Suite" which includes the most popular dances from his ballet "The Nutcracker."

Trepak:
Sometimes referred to as The Russian Dance, it is the official National Folk Dance of Russia. This dance comes from the Ukraine and was originally performed by the Cossacks, soldiers who were expert cavalrymen. The Trepak, performed by men only, is a brisk dance that is done in 2/4 time with the danced steps starting at a slow tempo that is increased throughout the performance. Dancers begin the dance in a line, standing side by side with their arms crossed over their chests. The dancers crouch into a love squatting position. Next, they begin a series of kicks, extending first one leg and then the other straight out in front their body while remaining in the squat position. The kicks are performed to the beat of the music and speed up as the music's tempo increases. As the dancers perform these kicks they may move into a circle that rotates counterclockwise of they may stay in a line, but move to the sides to put more distance between each dancer. To perform the next move, the dancers lunge into a squat position and spring as high into the air as possible. While in the air the dancers perform a split and extend their legs as far on each side as possible, before bringing their legs back together and landing in the squatting position.

Term: What is a SUITE?
As in the "Nutcracker," composers who had written operas or ballets which incorporated many long dance movements or songs often made arrangements of these in a shortened form for orchestra so that it could be played at concerts.

NEW INSTRUMENT:
Celesta (bell like sound) used in the "Nutcracker"

The celesta (pronounced /sɨˈlɛstə/) or celeste (pronounced /sɨˈlɛst/) is a struck idiophone operated by a keyboard. Its appearance is similar to that of an upright piano (four- or five-octave) or of a large wooden music box (three-octave). The keys are connected to hammers which strike a graduated set of metal (usually steel) plates suspended over wooden resonators. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celesta

The story:

The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (GermanNussknacker und Mausekönig) is a story written in 1816 by E. T. A. Hoffmann in which young Marie Stahlbaum's favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls

AUDIENCE BEHAVIOR:
Different venues have different expectations of audience behavior
Compared classical music audience to rock concert audience...is there a reason the audience is allowed to be noisy at a rock concert but not at a classical music concert? Answer: Use of sound amplification so the performers can be heard over it.

Classical audience shows gratitude by applauding, standing ovation.

Whistling and yelling is unacceptable except when people call out "bravo" or "bravissimo."

Sometimes when the audience wants more they may call out "encore." A way of asking the performance to perform another selection for the audience.

Students performed their prepared piano pieces for our recital. Others will play tomorrow and Wednesday.

March:

Term: What is a SUITE?

1.An instrumental composition, especially of the 17th or 18th century, consisting of a succession of dances in the same or related keys.
2.An instrumental composition consisting of a series of varying movements or pieces.

In music, a suite is an ordered set of instrumental or orchestral pieces normally performed in a concert setting rather than as accompaniment; they may be extracts from an opera, ballet, (Nutcracker Suite) or incidental music to a play (L'Arlésienne Suites) or film (Lieutenant Kije Suite), or they may be entirely original movements (Holberg Suite, The Planets).
