THANKSGIVING LESSON

This is a lesson given to the teachers
at our school to teach with
 for Thanksgiving:

History of Thanksgiving
Ask a few questions
about the video.
Ask students what they
are thankful for this year.
Close with:
Linus'
Thanksgiving Prayer

HERE IS A THANKSGIVING SONG
I WROTE TO THESE WORDS:
A special day when we can sing
To give thanks for ev'rything;
A day for turkeys to be sad,
A day for us to be so glad.

TO BE PLAYED
ON THE RECORDER

USING THE RHYTHM
OF THE SAME WORDS
STUDENTS CAN CREATE
A NEW MELODY
USING SOLFEGE

THEN THEY CAN CHANGE
THE SOLFEGE TO NOTES
AND PLAY THEIR SONG

THANKSGIVING SONGS

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving Day will soon be here
It comes around but once a year
If I could only have my way,
We'd have Thanksgiving every day
Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth by Currier and Ives
President George Washington's Proclamation of Thanksgiving
Issued, October 3, 1789
for sp - 20061122

President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed
Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863,
supposedly as a response to a campaign
organized by magazine editor Sara Joseph
Hale. In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt
moved Thanksgiving Day forward one week,
as it is presently celebrated.

The Pilgrims Came
The Pilgrims came across the sea,
And never thought of you and me;
And yet it's very strange the way
We think of them Thanksgiving day.

We tell their story, old and true
Of how they sailed across the blue,
And found a new land to be free
And built their homes quite near the sea.

Every child knows well the tale
Of how they bravely turned the sail
And journeyed many a day and night,
To worship God as they thought right.

Thanksgiving
The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.

Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway ---
Thanksgiving comes again!

WE GATHER TOGETHER:
A PARODY
WE GATHER TOGETHER
TO ASK THE LORD'S BLESSING
FOR TURKEY AND DRESSING
AND CRANBERRY SAUCE.
IT WAS SLIGHTLY DISTRESSING
BUT NOW WE'RE CONVALESCING
SO SING PRAISES TO HIS NAME
AND FORGET NOT TO FLOSS.

OUR NEAREST AND DEAREST
WE DON'T WANT CONFESSING
IT'S SORT OF DEPRESSING
TO HAVE THEM SO NEAR.
OUR FEELINGS SUPPRESSING
FOR LIGHTLY ACQUIESCING
AND PERFECTLY PROFESSING
WE'RE GLAD THEY WERE HERE.

WE GATHERED TOGETHER
AND GOT THE LORD'S BLESSING
OF COURSE WE'RE JUST GUESSING
'CAUSE HOW CAN YOU TELL?
OUR STOMACH'S ARE BLOATING
OUR KIDNEYS NEARLY FLOATING
HELLOS ARE VERY NICE
BUT GOODBYES CAN BE SWELL

'Twas the Night of Thanksgiving'
Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep

The leftovers beckoned ---
The dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation
with all of my might.

Tossing and turning
with anticipation
The thought of a snack
became infatuation.

So I raced to the kitchen,
Flung open the door,
And gazed at the fridge
full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey
and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots,
beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling
so plump and so round,
Till all of a sudden,
I rose off the ground !!

I crashed through the ceiling.
Floating into the sky....
With a mouthful of pudding
and a handful of pie,

But I managed to yell
as I soared past the trees ...
HAPPY EATING TO ALL !!
PASS THE CRANBERRIES PLEASE !!

Here is a funny Thanksgiving song:
Thanksgiving Overture
Based on
Rossini's William Tell Overture

THANKSGIVING TONGUE TWISTERS
Ten tricky two-toed turkeys
trotted on the table.
Greedy gobblers
grabbed the gravy.
Floyd flipped
five fine flapjacks!
Six sick swans
slurped soup slowly.
Chef chopped
cheese chunks cheerfully.
Betty baked a better batch
of buttered biscuits.
Eleven leaping lizards
licked lovely lemon lollipops.
Peter Pilgrim picked
a peck of pickled peppers;
a peck of pickled peppers,
Peter Pilgrim picked.
If Peter Pilgrim picked
a peck of pickled peppers,
where's the peck of pickled peppers
Peter Pilgrim picked?

Ilya RepinThe Duel between Onegin and Lensky (1901)
A movie was made of the original story
written by the author Russian author
Alexander Pushkin.
The story Eugene Onegin tells of Larina,
a widow, who lives in the country with her
two daughters Olga and Tatiana. Olga is
more cheerful and outgoing than her
younger sister, who spends her time
reading romantic novels. Olga is engaged
to a young landowner named Lensky.
One day Lensky brings a friend from the
city to visit Larina and her daughters. His
name is Eugene Onegin, a man who is
cynical, unemotional and bored by life.
Tatiana doesn't realize this and falls
passionately in love with him almost the
moment she sees him. She writes a letter
to tell him but Eugene does not reciprocate
and tells her not to be so ridiculous.
Tatiana is heartbroken.
